How to Build Your Portfolio

One of the hardest things about offering services is building your portfolio. No one wants to hire you without one, and you can't build a portfolio without customers. It's a common quandry.

But it can be easier than you think to find those first customers. One very popular way is to offer your services at less than your planned regular rates on eBay. People searching on eBay are looking for bargains, so may not mind taking on a relative novice for their project. It is very affordable to advertise on eBay, and some businesses use it regularly. Get a couple of projects under your belt and you have a portfolio.

Make sure you spell out in your auction exactly what you are offering, but also make it clear the customer can add to the package at your regular rates. Using website design as an example, you could offer a five page website with logo design, sales copy to be provided by the customer, and 10 external links. If a customer wants a shopping cart, that could be extra or you could include it. Just make sure you include those skills you wish to emphasize in your portfolio or you are wasting your time.

Other good places to look for customers include Elance, Guru, and Craigslist.

Particularly if you offer website design or webmaster services, you may want to consider both using and recommending to your customers SiteSell. They offer great services that will help you deliver great things to your customers. Their tools help with search engine optimization, site submission, and e-commerce options are on the way!
