Eeney, meeney, miney, moe… where should my money go?

There are so many pay-per-click search engines out there it can be hard to decide which one or ones to use. Each has plusses and minuses.

Google and Yahoo Search are the best known. They have the greatest coverage of the search engines, but they also cost the most, as there is more competition. Each runs in a slightly different way, as well.

Google places your ad based not only on your bid, but on how often it is clicked. A lower bid can place higher than other bids simply because more people click on that ad. You also must maintain a minimum 0.5% click through rate, or your ad will be discontinued. Yahoo and most other pay-per-click search engines, on the other hand, are based strictly on your bids.

Enhance is also a fairly popular pay-per-click engine.

One thing to consider is how different groups tend to search and shop online. You may find this article on search engine demographics very useful. If you know who your customers are and which search engine they tend to use, you can cut out a lot of less than productive campaigns.

What others are there?

There are perhaps hundreds of smaller engines out there. Many will never get you a visitor; they are simply too small. However, if they give you free clicks or only require a small investment, you might find one that is worthwhile… or you may waste time and a little money.

For many businesses, a combination of engines is a good way to go. If you can figure out how your target audience tends to find things online, you have a good idea as to where to go. Keep a sharp eye on the bottom line and know when you need to change your ads, cost per click or ad copy.
