Do I Need a Tax ID for My Home Business?

You'll often hear that you will need a tax ID to operate a home business. This is not necessarily true. There are simple ways to find out if you will need a tax ID. As this is a federal issue, not a state issue, you do not have to worry about regional differences within the United States.

You will need an Employer ID Number (EIN) in order to do your taxes if any one of the following are true:

If none of these are true for your business, then you do not need to get an EIN. Your Social Security Number will work for tax purposes.
