The secret to online success… isn’t that something we’d all love to have? But it’s not so easily stated.
Much of the secret is simply choosing the right products and/or services to offer for your skills and interests. There are many areas in which you can succeed online.
Many beginners start with marketing to other internet marketing. They see the success of the top internet marketers, read their ebooks telling the readers how to go about it, and off they go. However, this is a very, very competitive area, and there are many better places to get your start online. Take those tips on marketing and apply them elsewhere.
The first thing you need to do is consider your own interests and knowledge. If you are selling your own products or services, it is much simpler to work with something you know. If you are selling the products or services of others, you will understand the offers and the customers better if you have some knowledge of your own.
Research your topic. I prefer to start with Wordtracker’s free trial to find information on what terms people really search on and how much competition there is in the area. This gives you an idea as to whether or not your topic is worth pursuing. Don’t necessarily give up just because there is a lot of competition, but you will need to do research to determine if it is worth your while.
From there, figure out what you are going to be selling. If you want to be an affiliate, search the various affiliate programs for one suitable to your topic. Make sure the sales page is well-written, of course.
Now, there are a few ways to make sales. Some prefer pay-per-click, while others prefer to create a website and drive traffic to it. Each has its advantages. Pay-per-click is more or less instantaneous, while natural search engine traffic is free, but time consuming to generate.
If you create your own website, add content to it to attract both the search engines and customers. Write about your topic regularly, adding new content frequently. I recommend adding content at least once a week, so that you keep visitors and search engine spiders interested.
If you have your own website, you probably will want to start a newsletter. See my review of the newsletter and autoresponder services to help you get started with a service. A newsletter should be at least monthly, or subscribers will forget you, but I recommend weekly for most topics.
If you choose ebooks, buy a copy and do a review of the ebook. This adds to your credibility as a source and makes the potential customer feel more comfortable.
Pay-per-click works both as a supplement to natural search engine traffic and as a way to send customers directly to the product you are offering, depending on which way you prefer to use them. In all cases, you should do your best to send traffic to the product the visitor searched for, only rarely to the home page.
The most basic way to get lots of keywords for your products is to use Wordtracker once again. When you get serious about a topic, it is probably time to go past the free trial and use the full version. If you do preparation work in advance, start a few keyword lists using the free version, then when you have hours to spare, pay for Wordtracker for a day and start plugging in those phrases. You’ll generate quite a few more phrases. Have Wordtracker email all your results to you. If you get serious about this kind of marketing, paying for more than a day at a time may be worth your while, but for most beginners a single day will suffice.
