Why Isn’t My Site Converting?

You’ve built your website. You’re getting visitors. But they aren’t buying. Why?

The reason for this is not always immediately clear. You first need to take a good look at your sales page as your customer sees it.

Is making a purchase easy? Online, this means accepting credit cards and having an obvious place for the visitor to go to make the purchase. The process should not be too long nor ask for excessive information. Have a friend or family member who is not familiar with your website, and not an internet expert, try to make a purchase. If they have any trouble at all, you need to make changes.

Does your site make visitors trust you? Your website should look professional. This can vary by industry, but in most cases you want a white or light colored background with black or dark text and appropriate use of graphics. You should have contact information either on the page or a clear link to your contact information readily available.

What about the sales copy on your page? Does it encourage visitors to buy from you? Sometimes changing a single word is enough; other times drastic changes are necessary. Start with the small changes and keep track of which way sales go after each change.

In some cases, long copy sells better than short copy. If you’ve spent much time at all buying ebooks online you have probably seen sales letters that go on for several screens. You may or may not like these, but they do work, often even better than splitting the same content over several pages.

What distractions are on your sales pages? If you run Google’s AdSense ads on your website’s sales pages you should consider either dropping them entirely on such pages or placing them beneath your sales offer. You do not want your visitors to consider the competition first. Other distractions can come from links you provide to other pages or even to other products of your own. Keep the goal in mind and try to upsell the customer at the right time.

Have you taken a good look at how customers are finding your website? Maybe you aren’t promoting what people are actually looking for, or maybe you’re just using the wrong language. Look at how your customers are finding you and try to determine what would appeal to them.

Finally, have a way for your visitors to sign up for site updates or a newsletter. This gives you another chance at the ones who do not buy from you immediately, as well as to make repeat sales. Do not require them to sign up to make a purchase, but getting your customer to give you permission to contact them again is quite valuable.

Improving conversions is one of the best ways to improve your sales. You can have the same amount of traffic, but if your conversion rate doubles or triples or more, you'll earn more with just a little effort.
