Make the Most of Your Business Cards
Business cards are a highly effective means of marketing your business, whether you offer products, services or even if you do affiliate marketing. But you need to ensure that you use your business cards effectively.
- You need more than contact information on your business card. Include a tag line that explains your business. Otherwise, people will forget what interested them about your business. Also ensure that your website is listed. If you think a website is too expensive, think again. Domain names can be had for less than $10 a year, and hosting for less than $10 a month. Make sure you keep your contact information current and order new cards promptly if any of your business information changes.
- Order a large quantity of business cards to save money. You can get a small number for the cost of shipping at
VistaPrint, but these will have a logo on the back. However, their prices are quite affordable for more professional looking business cards. Even if you have a good printer, you will look more professional if you get them printed elsewhere.
- Get cards with your business logo on it. It doesn't have to be fancy, but a good logo makes your business appear more professional and credible.
- Try to make your business card stand out. This does not mean use flashy colors; be consistent with your business image, from letterhead to business card to website. Readability is vital, and most people prefer a light background and dark type. You can use a textured business card, a card with interesting corners, etc., just make sure it fits inside a standard business card holder.
- Keep a stash of business cards with you at all times, in your wallet or purse, car and so forth. Be very willing to leave it anywhere you can, from posting it on billboards to handing it to people you have spoken with at the store. Feel free to give people two or three, so they can share them.
- Include your business card in all correspondence, even if it has nothing to do with your business. This include bills and any products you ship. You never know who will open the envelope.
- Put a special offer, calendar or something related to your business on the back of the card. This will increase the odds that it will be kept.
- Do not just hand out your business card at the drop of a hat. Have a conversation with the person first. Business cards are highly affordable but there is no sense in wasting them.
- Have a supply of business cards from non-competing but complementary businesses and ensure they have a supply of yours. You will be able to refer customers to one another this way.
- Always give your business card when someone gives you theirs.
- Try magnetic business cards. You'll have a good shot at your card staying on the prospect's refrigerator or file cabinet for some time to come.
- Consider having your picture on your business card for that personal touch.
- If you are a member of a relevant professional organization, include their logo (if permitted) on your business card to add credibility.
- Do not give away damaged business cards. This will make you look unprofessional.
