Licensing and Inspections for Daycares

As you are taking care of other people's children, you will be subject in most cities to inspection. How often this is done may vary from place to place, but once a year is just about a minimum.

Your home or daycare center will be inspected to ensure that it meets local standards. Contact your local City Hall or Chamber of Commerce for advice on specifics for your area, but in general you will be required to have a TB test, background check, health check and home inspection, possibly to include check of heating systems.

You may also have to have written policies for discipline and emergencies. CPR and/or First Aid training may or may not be required, but is always a good idea.

You will be required to have functioning fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

You will have to confirm that you are zoned for operating a daycare center and if you have a homeowner's association you will need to check for any special rules they may have.

Make sure you know your local regulations before asking for an inspection. A resource such as this can only cover the general rules, not the specifics for your area.

I've been wanting to start a daycare in my home. I have a bit of a better idea of what I need to do and the questions I need to ask still. Can I email you if I need advice?
