Why Should I Blog for My Business?

By now you’ve almost certainly heard of blogging. You may have even read a few. But maybe you still aren’t sure why you should add a blog to your home business plan.

Perhaps the simplest reason is that it is another way to keep in contact with your customers and find potential customers. Yes, email has worked in the past and continues to work, but with CAN-SPAM and the competition spam email continues to give despite it, blogging gives you a great way to keep yourself in contact with your customers without worrying about spam complaints.

Blogging has been exploding all over the internet. Viewers love that they have control and they don’t get spam from reading blogs. They’re easy to subscribe or unsubscribe to; all you need is a reader or a way to keep up with the blogs you enjoy. Visitors are highly comfortable with blogs and RSS once they discover them - they can subscribe without giving any personal information.

For marketers, this can be a dream come true. It’s a way to give your customers that personal touch that can so often be lacking on the internet. It’s a quick way to provide content for your website. It’s a great marketing tool. And a well written blog attracts links, which helps to attract search engines and customers.

The lack of information about subscribers does present an additional challenge for marketers, so tracking of results becomes extremely important.

Perhaps the best part is the trust that it builds when your blog is done right. If you keep to the topics your visitors and customers are interested in, they can come to respect you as an online merchant. You can build a reputation as someone who knows what they are doing.

It isn’t hard to get started either. You don’t have to drag your website designer out every time you think of something you want to add to your blog. You log in and create your post and you’re done. Once your blog is set up, all you have to do is type and link as necessary.

The popular software is not terribly difficult to use. You can use Blogger, a free service from Google, to create your blog in minutes. If you want to have a little more control, there are free programs such as WordPress. The tool that you use matters very little once you’re set up.

The one challenge to blogging is that while your visitors don’t have to worry about spam, you do. Comment spam, where people make comments strictly to place links on your site is rampant. You will want to have the ability to delete such posts, and monitor your blog carefully for such things. There are tags, such as “NOFOLLOW,” but they only keep the search engines from seeing the inappropriate links; they don’t keep it clean for your visitors.

If you haven’t started blogging for your business, it’s time to start. It’s an area that is growing quickly. Take advantage.
