Many home business owners do it all themselves – writing, marketing, product creation, customer service, order fulfillment and so on. Others say that’s a huge mistake and recommend outsourcing as much as possible so that you can earn more.
Which is the right way to go?
Each way has its advantages. The best one will simply depend on your needs and your budget.
That budget is an important issue for many home business owners. Particularly when you’re first starting out finances can be extremely tight. And then you hear about the people earning thousands and thousands every month doing it all alone.
It’s tempting.
But that does not work for everyone. Most people have things they are good at and that they are not so good at. If it helps your business to grow faster and more profitable, outsourcing can be a huge help.
One of the biggest challenges to outsourcing is finding competent help at a price you can afford. If you find someone who does a good job for you it can be hard to hang onto them. Their prices may change as they get more clients and you can be priced out. They may go on to something else. They may simply not have the time for you all the times you want them.
Take an honest look at what is hardest for you to accomplish. Maybe it’s writing, maybe it’s accounting, maybe it’s marketing. Whatever the case may be, you can probably find someone to do the work for you to your specifications.
Now outsourcing can cause its own headaches. You have to communicate your needs and expectations very clearly or risk frustrating both yourself and the contractor. You can end up with something completely unusable or done completely wrong, and still be out money on the deal. It can be frustrating.
It also means it’s one more person you have to communicate with. This gives you a better chance of getting what you wanted. You’ll also have to agree on ownership of anything they may create for you, consider NDAs and so forth. It is not always easy for the unprepared.
Then there are the missed deadlines and other problems.
When you are just starting out, outsourcing is often simply not possible. Your average home business budget is quite small, and paying a good contractor can destroy that budget before anything is accomplished. But as you grow you need to give more serious thought to outsourcing so that your own time constraints are not limiting the growth of your home business.
