Naming your business well may sound like a minor deal, but it can have a major impact on how people view your business.

This doesn’t mean you can’t give your business an interesting name. It doesn’t mean you need to give your business a name that says exactly what it is you do. If that were the case, Google wouldn’t be half so successful as it is.

But you can choose a name poorly. If you give your business a name that sounds unprofessional, what will be the image of your business? If you give your business a name that sounds like you do something other than what you do, how will that impact you? These are things you need to think about.

Of course, these days a major consideration in naming a business is whether or not you can get the domain name or something with your business name in it.

But there’s more to it. You need to think about what you will do as your business grows. What if you go from a sole proprietorship to a corporation? Is this a name you will still want? What about if you expand out of your local area? Will you have any trademark concerns?

Using your own name can be easy, if that’s your preference and a good choice considering all other relevant factors. It can also save you the trouble of having to file a DBA, although some areas prefer that you register one in general when starting a business.

Trademark concerns can be a major issue. However, you can use companies such as Trademark Express to research your desired trademark to check for potential infringement issues. If you’re going for the trademark, that’s not a step to skip. You don’t want to start building name recognition and then have to change because you’re infringing on someone else’s trademark.

The domain name can be tough. There aren’t many simple ones available. You can try hyphenating your domain name to improve your chances, but then you get into issues with customers not typing in your domain correctly. Picking a good domain name can take quite a bit of time. You want it memorable, easy to type in, not excessively long, and relevant to your business.

Choosing a good business name is important and can be challenging, but you have to keep your head about it too. It shouldn’t take ages to come up with a good, usable name. But spending an excessive amount of time on your business name isn’t going to help you off to a good start.
