Blogging is a tough business. You wouldn’t necessarily think so, to see some of the success people have had, but there are far more unsuccessful bloggers than successful.

In part this depends on how you define success. Some blog more or less for the love of it. They may or may not monetize their blog. They blog, comment on other blogs at it pleases them, and enjoy whatever readers they may get. They don’t worry about consistency in terms of how often they post.

key

A lot of bloggers are far more serious about their work. They think out their posts carefully, try to post often enough to keep their readers interested and want to earn a living from their blogs.

And many, many bloggers in between.

In all of these groups, some are successful, some are not. How do you increase your odds of blogging success?

Choose a good topic

A topic you can blog well on is important. There will be competition. If there’s no competition, there’s probably little to no audience for your topic. If you can write well about the topic, in an engaging manner and a perspective unique to your blog, you improve your chances of succeeding as a blogger.

Your exact niche is a part of your success. You can take a topic such as electronics, and narrow it down, focusing on a type of electronics and the group of people who would use them, for example. The more specific you are, the more likely you are to appeal to that particular group.

Define success

What you consider to be successful may not be what other people consider to be successful. How you define your success as a blogger will help to determine how you go about blogging.

Success can be defined financially, by the number of subscribers you get or by other factors. Most people have more than one factor to consider when they talk about whether or not they are successful. Some factors will depend on other factors. You aren’t likely to earn a lot from your blog, for example, if you have very few readers.

Keep up with developments in your topic

The faster you can post about hot news on your topic, the more you will impress your readers. People love fresh news. If you review products, keep track of when new ones are going to be released. Watch news feeds for developments and offer your perspective as soon as possible.

Don’t bother jumping on news that isn’t related to your topic. It may get search engine traffic, but it won’t bring you regular readers. The value of going off topic is quite limited.

Join in the conversation

This doesn’t just mean respond to the comments people make on your blog. It’s often hard to build a group of regular commenters on a blog.  Find relevant blogs and comment on them. Even if the link to your site has a “nofollow” tag for the search engines on it, if your comment is well thought out and interesting you can build readership on your own blog as people follow your link.

The key point is to keep it relevant and have something interesting to say. Your comments can help to lead other people to your blog. If you just do the quick “good post” or nonsense comments, readers aren’t going to be impressed and they won’t follow your links.

Are there any guarantees?

No, none at all. Some people will do brilliantly with blogging, earning enough to make it their full time job. Others will be lucky to earn a few bucks a month.

You cannot afford to get frustrated too soon. It takes a year or more to build most blogs up to something respectable, even with regular, more than once a week posting. Others still won’t have much going on after a year. It can be a frustrating process but one that can be well worth it.
