Just about any home business can benefit from a blog. It’s a way to communicate with your current and potential customers and to give your online presence some personality.

As with anything unfamiliar, it can be a little hard to get going. You may be concerned that you won’t have ideas often enough for your blog. Many times bloggers are told they should add posts several times a week, daily or even a few times a day. Pretty rough schedule, especially if you aren’t sure what to blog about.

However, it’s not as bad as it seems, especially if you use a good blogging software. I use Wordpress, for example, because it lets me change the date a post appears. Appropriate themes and plugins give me a great deal of control over the appearance of the blog and what I can do with it.

Even large corporations are into blogging. If you do much business online, you’ll probably find Google’s blog interesting. Sun Microsystems employees are allowed to blog on their site.

Blogs don’t have to be extremely personal. You may be familiar with the online journal style of blogs, but there is much more you can do with them.

If there’s a product you’re recommending, you can share your progress with it. You can tell people about products you’re developing. You can share tips about products. You can talk about your business in general.

The best business blogs are interesting to their target audience. You want to draw them in and have them keep coming back for more. This is where blogs excel, especially if you make it easy for people to subscribe. I strongly recommend having links for people to subscribe through their My Yahoo, My MSN or customized Google home page, as well as a general purpose link to your RSS feed.

As you write, think about what your target audience will want to know. Blogging is really not that different from writing articles. You want your readers to enjoy what you write, and to feel motivated to become customers. If they’re comfortable that you know what you’re talking about, and that you’ll always be honest with them, they are more likely to trust you.

The disadvantage is the time it takes to run a good blog. You need regular posts.

However, this does not necessarily mean that you have to write a post each and every day. You should post at least weekly, but more often is better. You don’t have to write the post at the time you want to post it. Remember what I said above about changing the post time. I do this regularly, so that I only have to write when I have inspiration.

A well done blog is a powerful marketing tool. It’s a great way to create content for your website and to alert potential customers to that content.
