How Do You Come Up with a Home Business Idea?

One of the most common questions people new to home business have is “how do you decide what kind of home business to start?”

The answer isn’t nearly so simple as the question.

The first thing you need to consider is your own skills and interests. If you aren’t going to enjoy running your business, you aren’t going to be sufficiently focused on it. Many people say “follow your passion,” and that is true to the extent that you can make money by doing so. You have to choose the right passion.

Before you start any home business, do a little research. Find discussion boards and see what people are looking for. You need to be able to meet the needs that are out there already, not try to create brand new ones. It doesn’t matter that you love crocheting knee warmers; if there isn’t a market your business won’t go anywhere.

I do recommend taking a solid look at your skills as well as your passions. There’s enough you have to learn in order to start a home business that you don’t need to be learning a skill you’d merely like to have and think you would love. I think I would love to learn how to make quilts; they can be beautiful and functional. But I wouldn’t start a home business based on that assumption, as I have never actually made a quilt and only have limited sewing skills.

Just pick a search engine and start typing in things related to what you enjoy. Maybe there’s a direct marketing company you could join or maybe you’d prefer affiliate marketing. Maybe you’ll have to make your product or offer a service all on your own. You’re looking for inspiration and information first, starting your business second.

All Those Products Promising to Boost Your Business!

But do they work? There’s the real question!

If you’ve subscribed to many home business newsletters at all, you see these offers all the time, hyping the latest tool to really get your home business running. Maybe it’s prebuilt AdSense sites, maybe it’s keyword lists, maybe it’s those marketing secrets you’ve been needing all this time and never knew it.

The answer, as it is so often, is maybe. For some people these secrets will work brilliantly. For others, they’ll be a complete waste of money.

So much depends not only on the tools and information you buy for your home business but on how you use them. Even when they purchase these things, many people do not actually take the time to use them.

So what can you do?

The first thing is to look realistically at your goals and what you are willing to do to achieve them. I’ve bought some ebooks that have good information, but some of their recommendations aren’t my style. Nothing technically or legally wrong, but they aren’t how I like to run my business.

You should also look for real evaluations on each product before you buy. Not just the hype of people looking to make a buck by selling it to you as soon as possible, especially if they’re just sending the form letter provided by the person who made the product, but evaluations by people who have used it or products from the same person, and have real opinions on the matter. Nothing wrong with buying from affiliates (in fact, I encourage it); just make sure they’re giving honest opinions rather than blindly following dollar signs.

There are some things I use to help run my business more efficiently. I use private label articles not so much as a source of articles directly, but as research that has been done for me. I use an article submission service, iSnare, rather than submit using any of the software out there because, after trying both techniques, I decided that spending $2 per article submission made more sense than spending hours per article submission.

There are advantages and disadvantages to just about any product you can buy out there. Try to dodge the hype and get to the reality before you make a purchase.

What are the Best Internet Marketing Strategies?

If you want your online business to succeed, you need to have a great internet marketing strategy. You have to know how you are going to get people to come to your site and buy from you rather than someone else.

The first thing you need to do is develop your product. Now, I don’t necessarily mean developing a product that you are going to sell. Maybe you’re into affiliate marketing and plan on selling someone else’s products.

In either case, researching your potential product is one of the keys. You need to be sure that it is something that will sell.

Try to find a way to stand out a little. You have probably heard plenty about finding your niche in business, and there’s a good reason for that. A good niche will encourage people really interested in the angle you have found to come to your site and buy.

There’s the next step, right there. Creating a site that will encourage people to buy from you.

Your entire website should focus on getting people to take the action you want them to take; that is, buy from you! You can use articles to draw in search engine traffic if you like, but even those need a solid message that will encourage people to choose your products.

On sales pages, don’t be afraid to explicitly ask for the sale. Show them how your product is the solution to whatever it is they need and tell them to buy from you.

With your site solidly developed, it’s time to start driving traffic. There are several good strategies for this.

The first that many people try is search engine optimization. Target your keywords on various pages, get links to those pages and wait for the traffic to come in.

The trouble with this tactic is that it can take an awfully long time to actually start working. You may start getting indexed and bits of traffic within a few days if you know what you’re doing, but it can also take months. Getting traffic on your best keywords can take even longer, depending on the competition.

The next tactic is pay per click advertising. This gets you to whatever position you are willing to pay for on the search engines of your choice quickly, but can add up if you don’t know what you are doing. You really have to watch your profit when you use pay per click.

Another way to advertise is to buy space in relevant ezines. This can be quite affordable. Make sure you track your results so that you know which ones to buy from again. Just use a different tracking code for each ad you place and you’ll know plenty about who’s working when you review your statistics.

You should also consider starting your own ezine. This gives you many chances to sell to those who sign up, rather than just one. Provide solid information in your ezine, not just ads for your products, or you won’t keep your subscribers.

There are many more internet marketing strategies out there; the trouble is in trying to choose which work best for you. Perhaps the most important one is persistence. If you give up, you’ll never succeed.

How to Pick the Right Direct Sales Opportunity

If you’ve ever posted on a work at home forum that you’re thinking about starting a home business, you probably got flooded with replies all more or less saying “I’ve got a great opportunity for you!” So how do you decide which is the right one for you?

They say follow your passion, and this is a start for choosing the perfect direct sales company. These companies offer all kinds of possibilities, from selling makeup and such from the long established ones such as Mary Kay and Avon, to working with a brand new company that is just starting up.

Once you have decided which kinds of products you would like to represent, you need to start reviewing the companies. The Direct Sales Association is a great place to start. Their members must commit to a Code of Ethics. This gives you at least a little reassurance that the company intends to be professional and honest.

Find out what you can about the company: how long it has been in business, the range of products you can sell, what kind of investment is required, how many reps are in your area. You need to know if the market in your area is saturated, not covered at all or somewhere in between. After all, no matter how much success Aunt Sadie, Cousin Marie and five of your closest friends are having, if they’re all with the same company you need to think about where your customers will be coming from.

It is also important to look at who you sign up with. I would look first at the people who are eager enough to respond to you quickly, but if things just don’t click with them you might be better signing up through someone else. Your upline is often a major source of knowledge and support, which is vital to your success.

Direct sales is popular as a work at home business for good reason - it can be fun and there’s money to be made. But there are also challenges and money to be lost if you don’t know what you’re getting into from the start.

Why the Switch to Wordpress?

So why did I switch over to Wordpress, you may be wondering?

Flexbility is the main reason. Wordpress lets me do things such as put posts in categories, so it’s easier for you to find what you want to read about. It also lets me decide on when my post appears, so if something is time sensitive I can change when it appears, without having to log on at the exact right moment to publish.

I also just like having things under my own control as much as possible. Posting on Blogspot had some very slight advantages, mostly just being on a different domain, but this also meant that I had no control. My blog could have just as easily vanished overnight. Since this isn’t a spam blog I would be shocked if that happened, but anytime someone else has the control there is that possibility.

I put a lot of thought into this change. I had changed over some of my other blogs previously, so by this time I know exactly how to make the changeover as smooth as possible. Nothing makes it perfect, of course, but I can do this pretty well by now.
