Just throwing up a website with a stack of affiliate links, even if generated by a datafeed, isn't enough to maximize your affiliate income. Yes, you may get some traffic on obscure searches, but your goal should always be to provide the search engines with a reason to visit you.
Standard affiliate links as given by affiliate programs and datafeeds have a distressing tendency to be filtered by the search engines. Why shouldn't they, after all? There may be 1000s of pages using the exact same text. You have to find a way to stand out.
One way is to think about niches who might enjoy the products who are not being directly addressed by the original website. Create original content aimed at that niche and you should see your traffic develop.
Your first thought should always be of your prospective customers. Yes, they won't find you if the search engines don't list you, but if your site is ugly, slow loading, irrelevant, etc., getting visitors won't be enough.
Creating content may sound like a lot of work - a lot of people really do not enjoy writing, but it really is not that difficult if you understand your niche. Write as though you were talking to your audience. Check carefully for typos, especially ones that spell check won't catch, such as "were" and "we're".
If you already have a website going, but aren't satisfied with what your customers are buying, consider what is being bought. If you know what your customers are buying, from seasonal items to those which sell well throughout the year, you can build content that emphasizes those products.
What about the competition? I don't mean other websites, but what about similar products you can offer through other affiliate programs. Comparing similar products is a great way to add value for your visitors, and therefore for the search engines.
Finally, know how visitors are finding your website in the first place. Consider both the keywords you are doing well with in the search engines and which links are actually sending you traffic.
Creating relevant content will help your affiliate website to remain in the search engines even when algorithms change. If you provide unique, interesting and relevant content, your website will not vanish from the rankings despite changes.
